On the Street: The Dark Visits Yaletown

The Dark decided to hit Yaletown on Canada Day with a paste up of a popular John and Yoko photograph.

His version reads:

War is Love!
You want it
Merry Christwar from John and Yoko

The original photograph by Frank Barratt reads:

War is Over!
If you want it
Happy Christmas from John and Yoko

The Dark is a Vancouver Graffiti artist. I found 2 interviews of his here and a more recent one here.

An excerpt that strikes me is: “I realized awhile ago that there should really be no reason to cut corners for something that may only stay up for a few hours.”

At a time when you want everything quick and easy, to work painstakingly on something you know for sure is temporary and short lived is refreshing in it’s approach.

The Words Don’t Fit the Picture

This is a testament to – the use of words and language as boundless and imaginative, as a catalyst for a multiplicity of meanings, as explained by Ron Terada.

Located outside the iconic Vancouver Public Library, it was put up for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Paralympics. In 6 words it manages to describe what the vibe in Vancouver was for the whole month of February.

This coming Canada Day I wonder if things will turn into a “We miss the Olympics” party.

On the Street: Here’s Banksy

Here's Banksy

Walking along Robson I saw a glimpse of an alley with a lot of tags. I knew I had to explore a bit.

Banksy is a pseudonym of a British graffiti artist supposedly hailing from Bristol, UK.  He’s so prolific that you can find his stencils in various parts of the world today. I like his work because it always has a message. He often does satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics.

Banksy is the person responsible for my interest in graffiti, or maybe it was spraying aerosol back in elementary? I digress.

In 2007 he released a collection of his works by compiling them in his book, Wall and Piece. Last year, the Banksy UK Summer show opened at Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery featuring more than 100 works of art, 78 of them new.

For 2010, Banksy released a documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop. You can still catch it in Cinemark Tinseltown.

Escape Mondays: Alice in Wonderland Inspired

The Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad?

Alice Kingsley: I’m afraid so. You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.

My absolute favorite line in the movie! So today I thought I’d put together a few Alice in Wonderland inspired vacation ideas. I think it’s the perfect escapist book.

Stay

Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Zaandam opened in March 2010. It looks like a series of traditional Zaanse Schans village houses stacked on top of each other. The more elaborate exterior is juxtaposed with a modernist design inside. Rooms start at $176.00. [via Design Milk]

Or what about this unique wall climbing facility in Japan? I’m trying to find a current picture of Illoiha but the site is in Japanese so it’s hard to maneuver. [via Yanko Design]
