Exploring the Four Lakes Trail

Tracks

For BC Day I went to Squamish to explore the Four Lakes Trail. The 6km trail takes you around Edith Lake, Fawn Lake, Stump Lake and Alice Lake. You can reach the trail from the Stump Lake parking lot or the Alice Lake south beach area.

Alice Lake

We chose to start in the Alice Lake south beach area where we walked uphill (test of endurance for someone who abhors the gym) for about 0.5km. Midway through, we paused to enjoy the stream of water by the side of the mountain.  After the brief stop Edith Lake was another 2km walk on relatively flat ground.  Edith lake is actually not within park grounds so it was a bit out-of-the-way from the 3 other lakes. Fawn Lake was not too far from Edith Lake though with a 1km distance going the opposite direction. Once we took the obligatory photo at Fawn Lake, we headed to Stump Lake Loop and decided it was the best. There was a beautiful view of snow-capped mountains in the background and a strong stream running down the mountain. It was a great spot to rest and enjoy the water before we headed back to Alice Lake.

Stump Lake

It took us 2 hours to finish the trail with the downhill walk being a breeze. When we got back to the beach, it was time for burgers, pizza and BBQ. Yum!

Picnic at Alouette Lake

Traveled outside the city for a picnic at Golden Ears Provincial Park during the long weekend. It was a nice hour and a half drive from Vancouver.

Upon reaching the park, I was amazed at the view Aloutte Lake afforded. The overcast sky lent a deeper shade of blue to the surrounding.

Enjoy some of the pictures I took that day.

Escape Mondays: Hong Kong

Hong Kong Harbour

Hong Kong – I love it for its familiarity, the energy and most importantly the food. I’ve been visiting since I was 7 and sometimes feel going there is the same as going to any other city in the Philippines. The flight from Manila to Hong Kong is a short hour and a half ride by plane. On a Friday night, you can get caught on the road for longer in Manila.

It is easy to acquaint yourself with the area because they have a great public transportation system set in place. Their subway, better known as MTR is clean, fast and efficient. The female voice over announces the stops both in Chinese and English so don’t worry about not understanding which stop to get off at. And people have a good command of English (they were a British Colony after all!) nevertheless like any ESL they may take what you say literally so careful in the choice of words.

Eat

Street Food

I already have my must eat list when I go there. Roasted Duck and the slightly oily steamed rice, Xiao Long Bao, Fried Wonton, Yang Chow Fried Rice, Crabs cooked in a clay pot and Mango Pudding. For street food I like the egg puffs and all the really yummy fruit juice and shakes. My mom loves the ubiquitous sugar cane.

Seriously, Hong Kong food trumps everything I have ever eaten. Almost any restaurant you go to will not disappoint. My favorites though are Delicious Kitchen, Sweet Dynasty, and Yung Kee.

For western food, try the buffet at Conrad Hotel or have a gastronomic steak at W’s Entrecote. I have only eaten there once but have never forgotten the experience. Spaghetti House is another one of my favorites. And for dessert I like Toast Box and Maxim’s, which is known for really good dimsum.

Stay

Hong Kong is divided into two sides, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. It is accessible by MTR and cab however for a scenic tour try riding the ferry to and fro. I’ve stayed at both sides and have booked rooms in a number of different hotels in Causeway Bay, Admiralty and Tsim Sha Tsui. Because you will be doing a lot of walking (and shopping) it is always best to pick hotels that have MTR stations nearby. Views from your hotel will only be good if you get a harbour view or stay in Central. Otherwise you will get the scummy looking buildings which is normal in Hong Kong.

Do

Disneyland

For the young and young at heart visit Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park. They made a lot of improvements to Ocean Park throughout the years. It is definitely a more exciting park now than it was then. Hong Kong Disneyland still manages to remain the happiest place on earth and it holds true in Hong Kong. Just wait til you see a Golden Mickey show or the parade. ?

Victoria Peak is the highest mountain on the main island. Overlooking Hong Kong, you can reach The Peak by taking the tram. You can also enjoy the Sky Terrace or walk about the grounds and follow one of the suggested treks. There is also shopping and dining to be had.

Hong Kong, a known free port, is a shoppers paradise. From designer labels and high end brands to night markets, you can find it all there. Department stores and boutiques are aplenty in Hong Kong Island with the tallest building in Central. Tsim Sha Tsui has Harbour City, a 2 million square foot mall in Kowloon. Your night market options are Nathan Road, TST, Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei. No longer out on the street and more pricey but still affordable is the outlet located in Lantau Island.

Outside of Hong Kong you can opt to cross the border at Shenzhen, China or gamble like a high roller in Macau.

Other travel tips: Bring your hotel’s business card (in case you get a cab driver whose English is not so good or you are slurring after partying too much in Lan Kwai Fong.) And fair warning, follow road signs when crossing the street because drivers are merciless and they drive on the wrong side of the road. Or right, depending on how you look at it :)

Escape Mondays: Alice in Wonderland Inspired

The Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad?
[
Alice checks Hatter's temperature]
Alice Kingsley: I’m afraid so. You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.

My absolute favorite line in the movie! So today I thought I’d put together a few Alice in Wonderland inspired vacation ideas. I think it’s the perfect escapist book.

Stay

Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Zaandam opened in March 2010. It looks like a series of traditional Zaanse Schans village houses stacked on top of each other. The more elaborate exterior is juxtaposed with a modernist design inside. Rooms start at $176.00. [via Design Milk]

Or what about this unique wall climbing facility in Japan? I’m trying to find a current picture of Illoiha but the site is in Japanese so it’s hard to maneuver. [via Yanko Design]

Escape Mondays: Seattle

Seattle Space Needle

The boyfriend and I went to Seattle recently. We both have never been so it was a good experience exploring a new place together ?

Eat

Not so much eat, but drink! Be sure to visit the original Starbucks store on Pike Street. With our frappuccino-obsessed generation, their mugs and thermos are great souvenirs.

Stay

We stayed at Holiday Inn Express, a 10 minute walk from the Space Needle. The proximity made it convenient for us to go on the night we were arriving since we got in pretty late. But even though the location was great I wouldn’t recommend the hotel. It was old and our room had a weird layout. For the same location and dollar value, Best Western might be better because its facade looked newer. Or better yet, choose a hotel by 4th and Pine as that is their downtown core. Staying at the center will also save you the hassle of looking for parking in downtown.

Do

Every city has it’s own icon and Seattle’s most notably would be the Space Needle. Go see the sights of the city from up there. Tickets are sold for $17 each. You also have the option of buying the daypass which allows you to go up twice in a day.

See the fish sellers on Pike Place Market. One block down there’s an interesting store called World Market which had among other things, a cool selection of beers in unique bottles.

Seattle’s Safeco Field is beautiful. Find out the schedule of the Mariners and go to Seattle on a day that they are playing. Be sure to order the garlic fries.. it was hot, crispy and oh so yummy. And they also serve the most unstadium-like food – sushi!

One thing we did not have enough time for was the Underground Tour. The guided tour takes you below ground level into the the buildings and streets of what used to be ground level in the late 19th century. Wood pipes, brick buildings, old junk, and a rich history.

Finally to give you more reason to go to Washington State: British Columbia citizens qualify for nonresident sales tax exemption beginning July 1! Thank you, HST.
