Outdoor Movie Night in Yaletown

Drive-in movies may be few and far between now, but people looking to relive the experience have been lucky as this has definitely been the summer of outdoor movies! In June and July there have been screenings along Granville Street and Ceperley Park among others.

Last Sunday, the Outdoor Movie Night in Yaletown set up in David Lam Park for the 3rd straight year. The movie was Back to the Future and it was nice being able to watch it again, especially as we are celebrating the movie’s 25th anniversary!

It’s an epic movie that captured people’s hearts at 88 miles per hour and made Michael J. Fox and DeLoreans a household name.

Food Trip: Section (3)

L1100880

Located at the end of Mainland Street, Section (3) is a good place to go if you’re looking for someplace casual in Yaletown.

I don’t care much for their dark interiors and booth seating inside (it feels like a dive bar) so I usually try and get a table on their patio.

You have to appreciate Section (3) for its unique drink list with creative names and food that is surprisingly good. However, it may be a bit of hit and miss with this restaurant. An example: I had their yam fries on two separate occasions; first time it was dry and bland, and on my next it was almost dripping in oil. And yam fries can’t be all that hard to cook.

For drinks, their Sangrias are a good choice for summer. A lot of their drinks taste watered down though, so it would be best to order a double.

Over-all still good value for your money.

Tuesdays has $2.50 pints, lunch time can get you $10 quickies ($10 or less for lunch menu items) and every week they have Fresh Sheets which promises to be as local and affordable as possible.

FUN FACT: The neon-lit NERD sign above the bar was meant to be De Nero, their original name. But according to a provision under Section 3 the restaurant was in violation for using that name and thus had to change it.

On the Street: The Dark Visits Yaletown

The Dark decided to hit Yaletown on Canada Day with a paste up of a popular John and Yoko photograph.

His version reads:

War is Love!
You want it
Merry Christwar from John and Yoko

John and Yoko

The original photograph by Frank Barratt reads:

War is Over!
If you want it
Happy Christmas from John and Yoko

The Dark is a Vancouver Graffiti artist. I found 2 interviews of his here and a more recent one here.

An excerpt that strikes me is: “I realized awhile ago that there should really be no reason to cut corners for something that may only stay up for a few hours.”

At a time when you want everything quick and easy, to work painstakingly on something you know for sure is temporary and short lived is refreshing in it’s approach.

On the Street: Mini Yaletown

Grand opening of Mini Yaletown at their new location on 1039 Hamilton Street!

The night featured a go-go dancer, singer, and live painters inside and outside the showroom.

They had a guy KASP working on the hood of a Mini Cooper which was cool to see from start to finish. (Oh the fumes..)

Up for grabs was a 1 month lease on a Mini and a lesson on the circuit!

Free flowing refreshments and a selection of hors d’oeuvres was served as well.

Acquire, Conform, Consume, Invest

Yaletown Roundhouse Station unveiled another set of art installation earlier this week.

Acquire: A brand new personality and join the miserables

Conform: Now and freely accept a perpetual chronic disease

Consume: With pleasure until you are infected and rotting inside

Invest: In your lonely future and suffer if it’s sold out

Anti-capitalist images.. the pictures essentially pose the question: Will you change yourself to fit in?

*edit* The artist is Claudio Rivera-Seguel. A plaque referring to him and the work is to be installed in the walkway today according to The National Post.
